A Conversation with the KC Royals Top Communicator

Mike Swanson’s been around baseball for much of his life. As a kid, his mom took him to her jobs working for the Royals and Chiefs. That early exposure to sports cultivated a passion for baseball, and his career path reflects that.

The course of Swanson’s 38-year career in sports communications has brought him full circle – back home to KC. For the last 11 years, he’s been the lead communicator for the Royals. As VP of Communications & Broadcasting, he’s guided the communications and media relations team through the ball club’s highs and lows.

It’s certainly a great time to be a Royals fan. But, from a communications standpoint, what does it take to run such a high-profile communications operation with so many stakeholders? How does one keep fans interested, engaged and excited in the offseason? Swanson will be answering these questions and more at our next FX luncheon.

Be sure to mark your calendar and join us on Friday, February 3rd, when Swanson will be our featured guest. Please note that tickets purchased for the original January 27th program will be honored.

We guarantee you will not want to miss this program!

About the speaker

Affectionately known as “Swanee,” Mike has worked for World Series Champions in both the American League (2015 Kansas City Royals) and National League (2001 Arizona Diamondbacks). He returned to Kansas City in 2007 to work for his hometown team, and has also worked for the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres.

In 2002, Mike won the prestigious Robert O. Fishel Award for Public Relations Excellence. He has been the PR liaison to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Squad in Japan and for the last four years has spoken to MLB’s Rookie Career Development League, the first club PR representative in the 25-year history of the program. He will also serve as the PR liaison for the Dominican Republic during the year’s WBC, his second straight with the defending WBC champs.

As a statistician, Mike worked for years with Keith Jackson on ABC’s College Football and Monday Night Football. His experience includes more than a dozen college bowl games, six NCAA Final Fours, six Super Bowls, four NFC Championship Games and 20+ NCAA Maui Invitational basketball tournaments.

FX December Luncheon – Get Your (Legal) Business in Order for 2017!

legal_545x198

Sound – and accessible legal counsel is a must.

As freelancers, and small business owners, we may find it challenging to work with traditional law firms. According to small business owner and attorney (and our luncheon speaker), Chris Brown, “their out-of-date technology, practice methods, and hourly billing often don’t align with our working styles or how we run our businesses.”

After all, time is literally money for us. The more time we can spend working on our craft, the better. We also know that without access to sound legal counsel, we don’t know what we don’t know. That’s not good business.

Chris Brown, owner of Venture Legal KC will touch on the importance, ease and economy of getting established legally, along with some of the most basic documents and agreements to have on-hand. This presentation couldn’t be more timely as we start to focus on and fine-tune our business plans and objectives for 2017.

Mark your calendar now and plan to join us on Friday, December 2nd. Don’t miss one of our most enlightening programs this year – our final one for 2016. See you there.

About the speaker:
Attorney Chris Brown is the owner of Venture Legal and Legal Marketing – two companies he created three years ago. Venture Legal is the modern law practice and Legal Marketing is a website development and hosting platform for small law firms.

He is a staunch advocate and voice through his vigorous support of and involvement in the Kansas City area startup community. Brown, graduate of UMKC School of Law (JD, magna cum laude), is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, as well as the Missouri and Kansas state bar associations.

FX October 28th Luncheon – Suits vs. Creatives

suitsvscreatives

Suits vs. Creatives: Battleground to Higher Ground

Things don’t always go as planned – especially in advertising. It’s just the nature of the business. We all know conflicts can arise between clients and creatives when a deadline is looming, and the work was due “yesterday.”

Help is on the way, though! Our October program speaker and fellow FX member, Cami Travis-Groves has developed fail-proof, step-by-step ways to help diffuse conflicts and move forward with solutions that both suits and creatives can live with.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Diffuse emotions that run high during conflicts
  • Remain in control with objectives clearly defined for all involved
  • Find solutions that everyone can agree on

We all need better tools to resolve conflicts and keep our clients satisfied and coming back for more. Be sure to bring your questions, as there will be time for Q&A after the presentation.

Mark your calendar now and plan to join us on Friday, October 28th.

FX July Lunch – Branding the RideKC Streetcar

Businessman Standing on Steps Outside Talking Through a Megaphone, Large Group of Business People Listening and Applauding

Join The Freelance Exchange of Kansas City on Friday, July 29th, for a behind-the-scenes look at the design ups and downs that led to the final paint scheme, name and integrated regional brand for Kansas City’s new streetcar.

Kansas City’s first modern streetcar has arrived. In January of 2014, Willoughby Design was chosen by the Kansas City Streetcar Authority to create the brand identity system for the KC Streetcar. Simultaneously, Willoughby engaged with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority to develop a new regional brand.

Come hear Willoughby Design’s President Megan Stephens and Creative Director Nicole Satterwhite describe the process of branding not just a streetcar, but a regional transportation system. Get the inside scoop on the KC Streetcar names that were considered but discarded, and learn why the timing of this new/old mode of transportation is spot-on for Kansas City’s renaissance.

The event will also include a brief presentation and tour of UMKC’s Entrepreneur Hall of Fame, launched in December 2014 to celebrate successful Kansas Citians who built their businesses from the ground up.

FX December Lunch – What Creatives Can Learn from The Star’s Redesign and World Series Coverage

 KC_Star_545x198

Let’s Just Say it was a Busy October

In October, while the Royals were chasing the crown, The Kansas City Star rolled out a completely redesigned print edition — the first since 2006. The change surprised readers — and the responses that followed pleasantly surprised one Star staffer.

In an era where supposedly no one reads print newspapers anymore, Kansas City Star public editor, Derek Donovan was inundated with calls and emails from readers. Since the redesigned edition landed on readers’ lawns, Donovan has been busy answering readers’ questions and reading their comments about the newspaper’s new look.

Join us as Donovan tells us what drove the design overhaul, and gain some key insights for your own client work. Also, find out how The Star’s editors, writers and photographers managed some late-night deadlines to deliver stellar World Series coverage.

FX April Lunch – The P.O.W.E.R of Copy (and Design)

The P.O.W.E.R of Copy (and Design)

Does Anyone Read Anymore?

Creative Director Matt Fey asked the question during his December webinar titled, The P.O.W.E.R of Copy. We live in a time where we have access to so much information so quickly that it can feel like overload to readers. Creatives charged with telling brand stories through words and images know the challenge of trying to quickly catch (and keep) the readers’ attention.

Mark your calendars to join us on Friday, April 1, as Fey of J. Schmid & Assoc. Inc. offers a shorter version of his webinar presentation and time for Q&A. It promises to be engaging, interesting and educational.

Whether you write, edit, design or take photos, it’s important to have a structured creative process. Each letter in the P.O.W.E.R acronym stands for an actionable step in his process – a “check the boxes” verification. Fey’s presentation explains how design, copy and photos successfully play together.

You don’t want to miss this program.

About the Speaker:

Matthew Fey is an idea brothel … a sweaty commingling of words and concepts. He challenges the expectations of what catalogs and direct marketing can be, pushing the medium in daring, original directions. As creative director for J.Schmid & Assoc. Inc. , he has earned a reputation as an inventive problem-solver. Whether for catalogs, direct mail, space ads or any marketing channel, he understands the interaction between the page and the customer, the geometry of maximizing space while embracing simplicity, and the power of strong words to ignite action. His creative vision has helped define and redefine brands such as Jockey, New Pig, The Kansas City Steak Company, Relax The Back, Legal Sea Foods, Jack Stack Barbecue, The HoneyBaked Ham Company and Mead. His best ideas often begin as frantic Post-It notes scribbled in the night.
